Easy How-To Guide on Reloading A Rifle

Posted by Bitterroot Brass on 16th Oct 2024

Reloading a rifle is a skill that can save you money and allow you to customize your ammunition to better suit your needs. It can also be a fun and rewarding hobby. In this blog, we'll go over the basic steps of  how to reload a rifle.

How-To Guide: Reloading a Rifle

Before we get started, it's important to note that reloading can be dangerous if not done properly. Always follow proper safety procedures and always double check your work. It's also a good idea to start with a small batch until you get the hang of things.

Step 1: Gather your equipment

The first thing you'll need is a reloading press. There are several types to choose from, including single stage, turret, and progressive. A single stage press is the most basic and affordable option, but it can be slow. A turret press allows you to perform multiple operations at once, but it's still relatively slow. A progressive press is the most expensive option, but it's also the fastest and most efficient.

In addition to a press, you'll also need dies for the caliber you're reloading, a shell holder, a powder measure, a scale, and a priming tool. You'll also need brass cases, bullets, powder, and primers.

Step 2: Clean and prepare the brass cases

Before you can reload the brass, you'll need to clean it. This can be done with a tumbler or by hand. If you choose to clean the brass by hand, you'll need to remove the primer, resize the brass, and remove any dirt or debris.

Step 3: Prime the brass

Next, you'll need to prime the brass. This is done using a priming tool. Simply place a primer in the tool, position it over the primer pocket in the brass, and press down to seat the primer.

Step 4: Charge the brass with powder

Once the brass is primed, it's time to add powder. Start by weighing the powder using a scale. Once you have the correct amount, use a powder measure to dispense the powder into the brass. Make sure to double check the powder charge using a scale or a powder trickler.

Step 5: Seat the bullet

Now it's time to seat the bullet. First, make sure the bullet is the correct size for the brass you're using. Then, place the brass in the shell holder and attach the appropriate die to the press. Use the press to seat the bullet. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate amount of force to use.

Step 6: Final inspection

Before you consider your reloaded rounds complete, it's important to do a final inspection. Make sure the primer is seated correctly, the powder charge is correct, and the bullet is seated properly. It's also a good idea to test fire a few rounds to make sure everything is working as it should.
